Tech Tips with The Squatters at Sonic Academy!

Oliver Portamento and Alex Powell have a passion for music pumping through their veins, from their roles as event organisers to their top level production and unforgettable DJ sets, these two fuse influences from Oldskool retro dance, Hip-Hop vocals and Rave with current genres like House, Electro and Dubstep and whatever else floats their boat. Add into that chopped vocals, colossal breakdowns and you have a true melting pot of anything that they know will lift the roof off!

Former Radio 1 host, Kissy Sell Out, has been a big supporter of The Squatter and other big names in the industry have not far behind in noticing these guys unique and outstanding talent. Tiesto snapped up their remix of “Kryder – K2” to release on his label “Musical Freedom”, they’ve had successful remix releases on Southern Fried, Dim Mak and Champion Records, support from Radio 1, Capital FM and Kiss FM along with a tally of supporters like Armand Van Helden, Judge Jules, Calvin Harris, Plump DJs, Laidback Luke, Kissy Sell Out, Doorly and Steve Aoki.

Here they take time out to share the secrets of their "Squatters" sound in 10 fantastic Tech Tips.

Flunk - Queen Of The Underground Remixes (Beatservice Records)

In April 2013, Flunk - often referred to as 'Norway's best kept secret' - are back with their fifth studio album for the Beatservice label, Lost Causes. "Queen Of The Underground" is the opening track and first single off the album. Unveiled on the band's China tour last autumn, the cut is emblematic of Flunk's sound showcasing Anja's gorgeous but understated vocals accompanying the band's melodic precision and affecting songsmith. This single features three remixes of "Queen Of The Underground" by a trio of top notch Norwegian producers who lead the track, and Flunk, along new sonic pathways. Athome Project (Stereo Deluxe) presents an enticingly moody version with a subtle African influence, thanks to its funky, intricate broken beat drum pattern. The vocals and guitars lay on top of a bouncy, staccato bass line as effects and atmospheres deliciously swirl about. The next reworking is courtesy of Syntax Erik, who was part of prolific deep house duo Kyd & Kango. Melodic synth arpeggiations and a pulsing bass line characterize this mix, as a steady four-on-the-floor points the way to more discerning late night dance floors. Rising producer Kohib is next, coming off his brilliant Solar Day andTirakan EPs from 2012, and continues his trajectory with a bold revision of "Queen Of The Underground." Steadily grooving at 90 BPM, Kohib's remix is filled with the icy synth-play and exotic textures that he's known for as well as some particularly spooky electronic processing of Anja's vocal track. These three very different interpretations of Flunk will certainly intrigue DJs, dance floors, and listeners alike.

Nick Warren - "Lovely to have Flunk back. These are three great remixes."
Chris Coco - "I've always loved Anja's voice. The Athome Project version is great."
Gavin Hardkiss (Hawke) - "The Athome Project remix is super and very original."
DJ Rocca (Ajello) - "The Kohib remix is great."
Sean Johnston (Hardway Bros / Love From Outer Space) - "Excellent! In the game this weekend."
Stereo 77 - "The Kohib and Syntax Eric remixes do it for me."
Jarle BrÃ¥then (Full Pupp) - "Good stuff as expected! Syntax Erik nailed the remix."
Leri Ahel (Cosmic Disco Radio Show) - "Kohib always delivers. Love his remix."
Discomendments - "A very diverse package of mixes that all do justice to a well crafted song."
Aja Allsop (Ketch A Vibe Radio Show) - "A sublime groove that seriously kicks the soul ."
Clive Craske (Radio Reverb) - "The Athome Project remix has great drum work and concentrates of getting 'under your skin' vocal-wise. My favorite cut. Syntax Erik provide a mellow house rerub with a touch of funk, like dark chocolate with tiny ginger pieces embedded. Kohib provides a fantastic panning intro before going for a mercurial oceanic vibe that gradually begins to swing. It morphs many times in exciting and interesting ways … a work of great beauty."
Milton Welch (Soul Reflector Blog) - "Kohib is the favorite for managing to bring out a unique edge of the track that benefits from heavy bass and effect-laden production."

Marc Kelly!! Podcast page with 12 mixed sets uploaded and more to come

I saw your request on Twitter for info on DJs etc. and thought this would be perfect for my partner Marc Kelly. Marc had always been a closet DJ up until the point when we met almost 18 years ago. I was big into the club scene in Washington DC, as he was too, and was floored when he first let me hear one of his mixed tapes. I couldn't believe how amazing it was and that he wasn't out tearing up the clubs with his incredible talent. I was working at a bar/club at the time and got him a job DJing there. He quickly became very popular and grew a strong following, and greatly improved the club's business. With his success, we thought we should see how far his abilities could take him and decided to move ourselves down to the South Beach, Miami club scene in September of 1996. Though he had some success in Miami, the underside and shadyness of the club scene there started to give us too many bad vibes and wasn't enough for us to be able to pay our bills, so we decided to pack up and move to New York City in 1998. DJing became less of a priority in our lives and more of hobby for Marc once we settled in New York, but we never lost our passion for house music and continued to buy records and put together mixed CDs for all of our friends. We were in NYC for 8 years before moving out here to West Hollywood, California and have been here since the beginning of 2007. As record stores began to close and life threw us other priorities, making mixed sets of music began to wane in importance until a few years ago when online music stores began to get their act together and DJing software programs started to improve in quality and performance. Marc's passion for mixing started to reignite. Then we discovered podomatic.com and found a way again to share our love of music with friends more easily by posting our sets there as podcasts.

We've been able to transfer most of our old tapes/CDs to mp3 format and have posted a lot of them, with more to come. We've also posted 3 current podcasts from 2012. I believe Marc's talent that sets him apart from others starts with his musical ear and perfect pitch which guides him into knowing just which songs to mix with others and when to start that mix. If you listen to any of those classic sets we have posted you'll see the incredible journey that his sets can take you on with the proper energy exchange between songs that's created and enhanced by the mix. He's also excelled at choosing which songs mash up well together to create almost a new sound and has several mashups featured in each of his sets. His genre of choice for dance music is vocal house music mixed with tribal/cha-cha beats and spiced up with Progressive/Electro flavorings. His talent also lies in the programming of each set. We always like to have our sets convey a theme and a subtext that when heard together seem to tell a story as a whole that's greater than the story of each individual song. We believe that adds extra depth and meaning to our sets which affects people subconciously, helping them to feel the beat and be inspired and moved by the music.

Together we call ourselves Stop! Productions. Marc is the DJ/musical talent and I am like his muse/producer. I pick out and purchase all the music and have input into the programming and mixing and do all of his promoting, but he's the supreme talent of the duo who actually works the magic. It's hard to expose his talent for others outside our group of friends since he hasn't actually played out in a club in years, so I would be more than appreciative for any help your blog might contribute to others being able to be as inspired by hearing his genius as I am. His music is perfect for people to download and then play at their own private house parties, cardio inspiration for their gym workouts, traveling music to groove to while in the car/train/plane, or just motivation to clean the house to. If nothing else, I hope that you can at least listen to several of his sets on our podcast page and enjoy them yourself, even if you choose not to share it on your blog. Thanks for the consideration and let the music lift you up!!! You can hear all his sets at our podcast page, and that link again is

Ryan Watts – Electron / Bring It On [OUT NOW]

His previous release Beijing / Daft Pull on Xcience Records earned young Ryan Watts some serious shine in electronic dance music county, resulting in heavy duty support by the biggest DJ’s and radio, and interviews all over the worldwide web including the influential DMC Magazine. Picking up where Ryan left off, he continuous his strong, big riffed productions on Xcience Records with a spanking new two-track EP.

Electron is an amazing hybrid between nowadays big room progressive, contemporary Dutch House and nostalgic 80’s synth cords. Over to the flipside, Bring It Onhas more of an electro feel, contains a tad more groove without losing its peak time appeal. The EP may count on the support of Eddie Halliwell, Mark Sherry, Cevin Fisher, Jesse Voorn, Fausto and many more.
